CANON C70 | PROPER EXPOSURE IN CLOG 2 - Real World Scenarios
Just got one and overall happy with it but I still think it's overpriced. Lack of EVF option really annoys me and I agree with your build quality comments. I came from a C100 M2 so obviously dramatic IQ difference but the body and display hinge on the C100 is much better. I'm sure, like me, a lot of C70 users are field shooters and I really think Canon could have done better with their lower line cine cam.
Would you say you could use the C200 autofocus for sideline sports footage?
Looks fantastic
Did it have a EVF?
Seems like a C300III downgrade, besides the larger sensor and resolution.
Higher resolution, better low light, better autofocus, way more lens options with RF mount. C300 mark iii is still a great camera though!
@@GriffinConway Lost an CFexpress slot, AES/EBU, expansion units, row of buttons, full size XLR(huge one for me), swappable lens mounts. While having the same or lower dynamic range. I hardly care about resolution above 4K and don't care at all about sensor size. AF improvement seems nice, but lock-on on the c70/c300 was already great. Not a fan of using adapters, and there is little exciting RF glass outside of stills lenses. The PL and locking EF mounts swappable is fantastic. 4 years after the C300III, it's seems very meager. Exciting specs would been 32bit audio recording, electronic stepless ND system with auto function, IR-mode(cool feature on EVA1), IBIS , new handle with a zoom rocker or the jackpot.. ARRI 35 level DR haha. Even some remote/wireless control would be cool, but it's again very Canon-like closed off system. I heard they are bringing back interval recording, that was a strange omission from last gen. Maybe also raw output over SDI, like the C300II but then never any camera after that.
what did they say about the usable dynamic range compared to the C70. I read that it is better than the c500 but the c70 is better.
I’ve heard the same. Similar to c70 with 16 claimed stops, and slightly more than the c500
@@GriffinConway Thats good to hear. The C400 looks appealing but I know there is a c500 type cam behind closed doors
Thanks for all the great tips! There are some real Lifesavers in there for me that I didn’t even know about.
Questionable understanding of the phrase “off the record” 😅
😂😂😂 your secret is not safe with me
your car shots are really awsome!
Thank you!
Things you did not mention: No DGO sensor on the C400! This is likely due to it being full frame. But based on early tests, this camera does not appear to perform as well in the highlights as the C300 III and C70, and might even have slightly lower dynamic range. Check CVP’s dynamic range test. The highlight rolloff does appear to be harsher on the C400. Battery power! The C300 III and C70 will both last much longer than the C400 which will more than likely require V-Mounts, much like the C500 II. The C300 and C70 can run forever on small BPU batteries. No EVF! The omission of the EVF is huge to me coming from a C300 III and a C500 II. Canon’s on-camera LCD is not bright enough to be seen in mid-day, noon sun. I really wish Canon would have at least given us the option of bolting an EVF onto the back of the camera like they did with the C300 III and C500 II. The USB monitor is cool, but Canon has not confirmed that you will be able to utilize 3rd party monitors via that port!
Good notes, thanks for the comment. You are correct, no DGO. Canon claims 16 stops on this camera, the c70, and c300 mark iii. They claim 15 stops on the c500 mark ii. The only ones who have done proper side by side testing that I have seen is the video I reccomended, CVP. My guess is in the real world there will be minimal difference. For battery power, C70 draws 14w, c300 mark iii is 31w, and c400 is 31w as well. So c70 will definitely have the edge for low power draw. Canon told me 3rd party USB-C evf's will be available, as well as SDI evf's. I'm not sure about rear evf's though. Canon told me it will definitely be able to work with 3rd party monitors. That was one of the things they were proud of. Thanks for the comment DC!
If you want to support the channel and are Pre-Ordering the Canon C400, use this link: bhpho.to/3xdkizG
does it record gyro data for processing in gyroflow in post?
You are the pro, but C70 colors > Alexa for me.
My preference is Alexa, but c70 is still incredible and it costs about 70k less lol
I have been shooting Blackmagic, but for commercial work the name “Ursa” does not carry any weight. So the Ursa’s are gone and though I have access to FX6 bodies when needed, I had not purchased any for my own kit in hope that Sony would release a next gen FX6 or FX9. Well looks like Canon has jumped ahead and I have put in a preorder for the C400. My biggest disappointment is the single CFExpress slot. Though there’s some consolation in having simultaneous proxies to the SD slot. I had a CFExpress card go bad on me recently. Thankfully this was during testing prior to a shoot so nothing was lost, but it was a reminder that solo card recording will always be a tightrope walk and client work can get lost when you least expect. Anyway, C400 it is for me going forward.
Nice I am sure you will love the c400. One thing to note, it can record full 4k 10 bit 422 files to the sd card simultaneously while recording raw to the cf express, so that is a really solid backup!
@@GriffinConway 10-bit 422 is a lot more substantial than a proxy. That’s for sure. Overall it’s a lot of camera for the money and who else will go to the trouble of engineering a triple native sensor? I’ve wanted the 12800 for those times when the light runs out and now I’ll have a camera tailored for the in-between conditions as well. That’s a lot of flexibility.
Hey Griffing, thanks for the info. I know you have a lot of experience with the C70. I would like to ask you two questions if you don’t mind: Speaking solely about dynamic range, how does the C400 stacked sensor compares to the C70s DGO sensor? Do you think this would replace the C70 or do you see a C70 Mark II coming in the future. Bonus question: Would you buy the C400 to replace your C70s? Thanks a lot for your content, it led me to get the C70 and it was a money maker for me for the last couple of years.
Awesome glad to hear that! Thanks for watching. I think the c70 will have a mark ii in the future. It was a popular camera and I can imagine a version ii coming out that’s priced lower than the c400 with a few less features. On the topic of dynamic range, I haven’t personally tested them but I will test them side by side in real world conditions and see what is noticeable. From the early tests I’ve seen, it seems they are very close in dynamic range, perhaps with a slight edge to the c70. For high iso I think the c400 will be much better. I plan to keep my c70’s and the c400 will likely replace my c500 mark ii.
@@GriffinConway Thank you so much for replying. I love the C70, for my documentary work where I don’t usually have the luxury or time to light scenes DR is important. But that triple ISO Full Frame PL mount converter And DPAF That stuff has me drooling about this. Thank you again for your content looking forward to your future test in the field.
will you get a pre prod model to review before they ship? if so, any idea when? 😅 I'm australian and our financial year ends 1st of july, considering making an investment but want to see some more in depth reviews
I have asked Canon and they said I should be able to get one to test out for a bit. Hoping it’s soon!
Nice video. Any word on viewfinders, either from Canon or 3rd parties?
I think there will be some cool new options coming between now and the time the camera actually releases
What I am curious about is qualitative difference between the DGO sensor in C-70 & this sensor? The low light capability is very appealing if visually it is comparable to DGO.
Surprised to hear the you loose some of the character when shooting with your Ironglass lenses on the c70. Does your RF to PL adapter have a speedbooster? If it does, I would have thought the lens would show up the exact same as a full frame sensor e.g. the edge fall off, bokeh etc
What I mean was they are full frame PL mount lenses. When I have to use the RF to PL adapter I don't get the "full frame look" since it only uses the center portion of the lenses. Still looks good but it turns the 58mm in to a 87mm field of view.
Mate, i have no idea how you do it, but every video of yours starts with a big smile on your face, you are such a legend!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment!
What you do think about "*price subject to change" ....
I imagine they put that on all cams but no idea tbh
4:20 C70 loosing DGO technology if you shoot in more than 60FPS it means a lot of dynamic range!
For me personally, it's a pass. The ergonomics aren't to my taste (I prefer compact and light, the smaller the better). And in the sample footage I've seen so far, there really hasn't been much of a jump in image quality compared to a C70, though I'd be open to being proven wrong by a side-by-side comparison. But the odds are that, in a year's time, Canon will bring out the same sensor, drop it in smaller body with fewer inputs and outputs, and halve the price. Then, sure, I might think about upgrading...
I'm looking forward to testing the C70 side by side with the c400, but either way the c70 is still an amazing camera.
Pre-order placed. Just about everything I was personally looking for and cheaper than expected. Only two things I still want, and who knows they might be possible, is 3:2 open gate and 1.5x anamorphic desqueeze.
I don't think the sensor is technically 3:2 I think it's a slightly different size but ya, I agree whatever the ratio full open gate and also a 4:3 sensor mode would be great. I haven't talked to anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if they add a 1.5x desqueeze in firmware
If it was a C70 upgrade, the upgrade on the price is laughable and you know it.
I don't think it's positioned as a c70 upgrade. I actually thought the price was great. Compared to everything else out there on the market that's 6k 60p full frame and has internal raw it's a pretty good bargain.
Best cam of 2024. Smokes the Komodo x and burano in every way possible. I can’t wait to see it in your hands
Looking forward to testing it myself as well!
Significant crop on the commode. Me think.
Happy OG Komodo user since August, 2020. I came from the c200, loved the ergonomics but like many missed that middle ground codec. While the c300mkiii had my attention, I just didn't go for it, same with the c70 . The c400 however checks way more boxes than the Komodo X does for our projects and I think it's initial feedback has officially sold me. Very impressive camera and I can't wait to produce something with it!
I think these two cams would play well together in raw. I have used Komodo X along with c70 in raw and once they were graded it was hard to tell the difference.
The c300mkiii/c500mkii is the most Ergonomical camera in that price range. With the most features I would argue. I love the way these cameras feel bare or rigged out. The c70 is cool for what it is but the placement of Card slots/Timecode and audio is bonkers it was clearly an afterthought.
Ya I agree I like the form factor on the bigger cams for sure. Stoked for this cam to be out in the wild soon so I can test it.
@8:05 spit take
😂
C400 sensor seems to have a lot of similarities in specs to the r3. I’m wondering if they just gave it a more powerful chipset to increase DR, but worked from the r3 sensor.
I own the R3 and will test it against the c400 soon as I can!
It would be good to see a review of the controls. One punch for HFR? One punch for digital zoom? What modes preroll. The only actual controls we care about. HFR and sound?
Good notes I’ll make sure to cover that in my review once I actually use it on a few jobs
I have an R5C and a C70 and I am pumped for this one!
Ya I think this will fit right in with those cameras as the perfect A cam
@@GriffinConway Definitely, Time to save some money 😂
Ihave a c200 and a r6 - the c400 is everything I dreamed of. But recently ive just felt the c200 to be a lump and the r6 to be small and nimble. I dunno if the c400 is 'it' especially as the loupe doesnt seem really sorted. Ive not seen a photo of anyone looking comfortable with it. Just people waving it around like a phone! I think it will need a shoulder rig just like my fs7 c200 and all the others
log2 is great but wish this has 16 bit capabilities
hi griffin I'm c70 user do you see a difference in dr by dgo and this triple Iso. i would like add beside my c70 this camera but for this price tag i have also a red komodo x or maybe with the all in one like the ronin 4d 8k ? ps: i recommend the griffin's luts!
Thank you for the recommendation! I think those are all good camera options, but the ronin 4d means your lose audio capabilities and don’t have the option to get rid of the “gimbal look” if you don’t want it for your shot. I think this is the perfect c70 upgrade. I will get the camera in for testing and compare it with c70/c500 mark ii and see how the dynamic range looks. Canon says it’s 16 stops which is the same as the c70 and more than the c500 mark ii
Nice chat Griffin, enjoyed your take on it. A complete 'no brainer' of a camera. So much to offer. If I was to nitpick, I'd love to have seen a slightly tighter rolling shutter speed and maybe some higher fps (even in crop). I like what you said about getting a larger third party monitor which will work nicely and the second clean feed out etc, really awesome little cam for a great price.
Great video man! Missed the Griffin Conway UA-cam Channel :)
Thanks Ryan! Hope you are doing well bro!
No DGO sensor no buy and I have to see I'm not that impressed by the sample images I've seen so far..
Too late for Canon, the amazing 2 000 $ Eclipse is near to be available ! ua-cam.com/video/sSKlqLseHog/v-deo.html
I just noticed we were at the same event! Haha.
Hope we can use the black magic usb c viewfinder. Biggest gripe with my C70 is trying to get a viewfinder on it.
Ya I think it will most likely work. Excited to see myself as well.
It canon made the c70 mkll instead of this with a full frame sensor and a few correction to the little issues is has. That camera would sell like hot bread.
Do you secretly work for R&D at Canon? Good video and keep creating.
Haha I wish!
Please nudge Canon to add vehicles and wildlife. Other than that, this camera is pretty much perfect.
Great addition imo. Full frame 6k, RF mount, Triple ISO and smaller than C500mkII. USB- C connections look like a smart choice. EF to PL adapter. This with the RF 24-105 f2.8 IS will be an awesome combo!
Great video dude! I think this is going to be such a beast camera and probably the best doc and corporate camera to date. Thanks for the shoutout too!
I agree! I think it will be an amazing workhorse cam for sure.
What excites me most about the c400 is the low light capabilities.
Ya same! That was an area the c70 struggled so I think this will be a nice upgrade.
This is a nothing burger upgrade!!!👎😔
Good to get your take on it Griffin. This is basically the camera I have been waiting for since my original C100. However, since then Sony have really dominated and become the norm for so many people here in the UK, that I fear the C400 won't become widely used, and therefore might need some convincing of clients or production houses. Also, my C70 has worked so well for me (outside of the Sony situ) that I think it'll be hard to justify upgrading to the C400. I'll see how it gets on in the industry before thinking I NEED it. Totally agree with you about the triple native ISO's it'll be so useful, a lot of people don't seem to realise that it is hard to get a clean image from the FX6 and FX3 around the sensible range of 2000-6400, it is actually noisier than a lot of other cameras around that range.
My C70 has earned nice vacation as my Bcam.. so stoked about the C400. Great video, as always!
Nice! C70 should be a perfect B cam for the c400
